Charles Clarke was a true visionary, who had a profound impact on the development of Mooloolaba. His entrepreneurial spirit and determination to meet the needs of the community led to the creation of the White Line Motor Service, a transport business that served the local farmers and residents, as well as holidaymakers. Charles was not one to shy away from a challenge, and he was always willing to go the extra mile (literally) to ensure that his passengers arrived at their destination safely and on time.
His transport business proved to be so successful that he decided to expand into other areas, such as delivering cream to the tram and train, and operating a billiard saloon in Buderim. But perhaps his greatest achievement was the Bondoola Guest House, general store and café, which he opened in 1928. This was a place where tourists could stay and experience the beauty of Mooloolaba, and it served as a major draw for visitors to the area.
Charles was also a man who loved to help others, and he was actively involved in the community. He was elected President of the Mooloolaba Bowling Club nine times, and he was honored with a life membership in 1956. He also had a passion for fishing, and he met a demand for deep-sea fishing by making trips to the Gneerings reef system off the coast of Mooloolaba.
In 1965, the Mooloolaba-Alexandra Headland Progress Association requested that the recreational parkland fronting the Mooloolah River be named Charles Clarke Park, in honor of this pioneering entrepreneur. In 1967, Charles attended the dedication ceremony of the park, and he was carried gently back across the road, acknowledging cheers and applause with a silent wave of a hand.
When you visit Charles Clarke Park today, take a moment to remember the man who made it all possible. Charles Clarke was a true trailblazer, and his legacy lives on in the vibrant community of Mooloolaba. Whether you’re taking a stroll by the river, having a picnic with friends, or just enjoying the sunshine, Charles Clarke Park is a place that celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit and the pioneering spirit of one of Mooloolaba’s most beloved residents.
